Education key to reducing Maori jobless numbers
Education Minister Hekia Parata says young Maori need to stay at school longer if they are to get some of the new jobs being created.
The Government is buoyed by a Maori unemployment rate of 11 percent, the lowest since National came to office.
Ms Parata says the rate for young Maori and Pasifika is still unacceptably high, which the government is addressing through a range of internship, apprenticeship and trade training schemes.
"But the fact for young Maori and their opportunity to get employment in some of these newer jobs that are being created is that we need them to stay at school and get a good qualification or we need them to get in to the level one two and three foundation courses that we're also funding, fee-free for our up to 19 year olds so that they are going to get equipped with the skills they need to get these jobs," she says.
