Kahungunu artists showcased
Singer-songwriter Toni Huata is putting Ngati Kahungunu artists first at a Matariki showcase in the capital next month.
The concert at the Wharewaka function centre on Wellington’s waterfront will include kapa haka performances from Te Kura o Otari in Wilton and Kahungunu-a-Tara, a seniors group led by Ngati Kahungunu composer, Te Taite Cooper.
It will also feature performances to launch three Te Mangai Paho-funded recordings produced by Huata.
They are her own Tomokia, which includes music by Paddy Free, Te Manu’ by PAO members Karl, Te Manea and Tangaroa Teariki; and an EP by brothers Adrian and Marc Wagner.
To mark the start of New Zealand Music Month, The Wagner Brothers EP has been released today on iTunes.
Huata says whakapapa is an important part of the Maori New Year celebrations, and the concert a great way to bring whanau together to share stories, knowledge, new music and performing arts.
