Kohanga vision is more than te reo Maori
Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia hopes kohanga reo whanau will look at what their movement can do beyond early childhood education as it restructures itself for the next 30 years.
She says the appointment by the weekend’s national hui of a working group to develop a new governance model was constructive, although the eight-month timeframe seems excessively extended.
Mrs Turia says there was a lot of talk in hui workshops about vision and values, and that needs to embrace more than te reo Maori.
"Kohanga reo is like the basis of a Whanau Ora movement and when we think Whanau Ora we think about all the issues that impact on whanau that make us strong and of course the reo is a major component. I think we need to look a lot broader about what kohanga reo is and for ", she says.
Tariana Turia says there was concern that many kohanga reo tamariki don’t go on to kura kaupapa Maori immersion schools.
