Okahu Bay goes rubbish free for summer

Visitors to Okahu Bay are being urged to take their rubbish with them when they leave.
Malcolm Paterson from Ngati Whatua o Orakei says the hapu and Auckland Council are trialing a rubbish-free initiative at the popular Auckland waterfront park.
They have removed 14 rubbish bins from the park, and banners have been put up urging people to “take your litter with you. Tēnā tangohia atu āu ake parahanga”.
Kaitiaki ambassadors from Ngati Whatua o Orakei will also be talking to visitors about the initiative.
“This area has great cultural significance for Ngāti Whātua. We would like to encourage people to enjoy their visits here and show respect for the land and their environment by taking their rubbish home with them and recycling it,” Mr Paterson says.
Rubbish-free initiatives were successfully introduced by previous councils on regional parks and at some local neighbourhood parks in west Auckland.
