Breakaway Anglicans denied putea
The High Court has ruled on a dispute over a $250,000 bequest that has split the Maori Anglicans in Tai Tokerau.
It has ruled that the money, which has almost doubled since it was paid over in 2002, should go to the Vestry for the Parengarenga-Ahipara-Peria Anglican Maori Pastorate, rather than to a group led by Rev Dennis Urquhart that broke away from Hui Amorangi ki te Tai Tokerau.
The Court says the claimants do not recognise or sit within the authority structures of the Anglican Church, so they are not entitled to the funds.
The Bishop of Te Tai Tokerau, Kito Pikaahu, has welcomed the judgment and hopes the community can come back together.
