Rotorua kids encouraged to make movies
Rotorua schoolkids are being encouraged to make movies with their smartphones as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute.
Te Puia marketing manager Kiri Atkinson-Crean says the celebrations will include a Movies in the Pa festival on November 15 and 16.
She says the organisers want to intersperse historical short silent films about Te Whakarewarewa Valley with views of the valley and Maori culture through the eyes of its youth.
They will do that through a smartphone app called Vine, which allows users to create and post 10-second video clips.
Haka Boy Films producer Mike Jonathan and Velvetstone Media producer Lara Northcroft will hold a workshop on vining to give the students some pointers.
The 50th anniversary celebrations will also include a concert featuring legendary showbands and contemporary artists, carving restoration, artworks, new visitor experiences and will finish with a unique Christmas carol event on December 14.
