Summit puts rangatahi at centre of tribe
Waikato Tainui wants to get more of its rangatahi engaged in tribal affairs.
That’s the aim of the Rangatahi Summit being held at Turangawaewae Marae this week.
Executive chair Rahui Papa says it’s important to support the next generation of leaders.
The biennial summit will look at the state of Waikato-Tainui reo, the significance of Kiingitanga, and the role of rangatahi within the discussion and implementation of tribal initiatives.
Mr Papa says it will provide rangatahi with a cultural and historical experience, which allows them to learn about the tribe’s past and play a role in its future.
About 70 percent of the tribe’s 65,000 members are under the age of 35.
