New leader for Te Aute
The commissioner for Te Aute College is confident a new principal is the perfect fit to bring the historic Hawkes Bay Māori boys boarding school out of its recent troubles.
Elizabeth Ellis says there were some excellent candidates for the post, but Shane Hiha from Ngāti Kahungunu stood out.
He’s currently deputy principal at Napier’s William Colenso College, and he has previously worked as a primary school teacher, the sole charge police constable at Te Araroa and charter fishing off the East Coast.
Mrs Ellis says that has given him the values and the experiences to lead the school into its 160th year.
"Shane fits into that category as a leader, He’s a leader in education and he will certainly build the school and we’re really confident he is the person we need to move the school forward and to build on the positive things that are happening there," she says.
Shane Hiha will take up his position at the start of the fourth term in October, and a new board will be appointed the same time to take over management from commissioner Ellis.
