Deal done on Rawene sewage

Hokianga action group Te Mauri ō Te Wai has won agreement from the Far North District Council setting out new consent conditions for Rawene's sewage treatment plant.
Treated wastewater from the plant goes into the Omanaia River, which empties into fishing and shellfish grounds in the Hokianga Harbour.
Hokianga residents have been fighting renewal of the consent since 2008.
It has now agreed to study the feasibility of upgrading the plant or developing an alternative treatment system.
There are stricter guidelines for monitoring wastewater from the ponds.
Manawhenua hapū Ngāti Hau and Ngāti Kaharau are inviting hapū and community groups to put forward representatives to form a new community liaison group to work alongside the council.
