A new Taranaki band wants to widen the range of te reo Māori music.
Te Kohikohinga Kohatu has released its first single for New Zealand Music Month, a funky version of the Taranaki anthem Whakataka Te Hau.
Manager and singer, Morgana Watson, says she formed the band with her partner, Simon James, after attending the Womad Festival and seeing the range of styles that musicians around the world were using to celebrate their cultures.
She says the band is trying for a mix of world music, jazz, funk, soul and reggae.
