Grace brings out reserve in road fight
Writer Patricia Grace has asked the Māori Land Court to declare land she owns at Waikanae a Māori reservation.
That could affect the plan by the New Zealand Transport Agency to take the 983 square metre block for the McKays to Pekapeka Expressway.
Mrs Grace told a hearing on the road last year that it was part of the Tuku Rakau village where her great-great grandfather Wi Parata and other ancestors lived and cultivated.
She said there should be no further alienation of Māori land, particularly sites of cultural and historical importance.
