Horomia mourned by Kingitanga
Kingitanga spokesperson Tukoroirangi Morgan says the Kingitanga and Waikato Tainui have lost a great friend.
Mr Morgan says Parekura Horomia had King Tuheitia spend time with him yesterday morning for a final conversation.
The Ikaroa Rawhiti MP died about 4.30pm yesterday afternoon at his home in Mangatuna near Tolaga Bay.
He had attended the annual Koroneihana hui in Ngaruawahia for more than 40 years, and his understanding of the iwi was invaluable when the Waikato River claim was settled.
“He was along with Doctor Michael Cullen, the deputy Prime Minister at the time, was responsible for the Waikato River Settlement, one of the complex, one of the difficult to be agreed upon between the crown and Māori. Parekura he was a very clever pragmatic steward of justice and what was appropriate at the time,” he says.
Tukoroirangi Morgan says Parekura Horomia was both a man of the people and an astute politician who could read the political tea cups better than most.
Parekura Horomia’s body will be taken on to Hauiti Marae at Tolaga Bay at 9.30am tomorrow morning, and his funeral will be on Saturday.
