Police officer Paddy Whiu cared for community
There is mourning in the north for popular police officer Paddy Whiu, who died yesterday (Sunday) after being diagnosed with cancer at the end of last year.
Patrick William Whiu was 63.
The Northland police iwi liaison officer was known for his no nonsense approach, his compassion and his humour.
Māori Party co-leader Tariana Turia says his death is a huge loss to the police and to Māoridom.
“I knew Paddy through work he was doing with Judge Rota and with others from Moerewa. Looking at how do we stem the tide of our young people, going through the courts system and then into jail. He was very committed trying to find other solutions for our young people”. says Mrs Turia.
Tariana Turia says he also did a lot of the training for Maori wardens.
Paddy Whiu is lying in state at Kaingahoa Mārae at Mataraua near Kaikohe.
