Domestic violence challenge for Waitangi hui
Visitors to the official Waitangi Day commemorations are being asked to take a stand on domestic violence.
Te Pataka Ki Waitangi has invited panel members from Sir Owen Glenn's independent inquiry into child abuse and domestic violence to hold a public forum, along with organisations like Women's Refuge and Victim Support.
Ngapuhi kuia Titewhai Harawira says she wants to see a national movement that reaches down to every marae and taumata.
She says it's the most important issue facing Māori.
“What is the use of dedicating our lives to fighting for all these kaupapa and our treaty rights and we have no one to leave them to. Our people, Māori out there are killing our babies; they’re killing the spirit of our women through the violence and the sexual abuse of our women”. says Titewhai Harawira
There will also be a hikoi from Paihia to Waitangi starting at 10 tomorrow morning led by Kate McGrath, whose whanaunga Patricia McGrath was allegedly killed by her partner in Whangarei last year.
