Settlements start of new journey
Labour MP Shane Jones says the Government’s push for treaty settlements is being helped by frustration among Māori at the process.
Today's settlements with top of the South Island iwi Ngāti Koata and Te Atiawa bring the total this year to 12, the most signed in any calendar year.
Mr Jones says many of the settlements are relatively small and the way they are done will leave some hapū and whānau feeling their issues have not been addressed adequately.
"I think more people have become frustrated, exasperated, accepted the process has taken too long and let's hop out of this process with what we can receive from it and go on another journey," he says.
