Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board chief executive Topia Rameka has been elected as the new chair of Taupo-Nui-a-Tia Management Board, which brings together crown and iwi to manage the lake.
Mr Rameka says the iwi's ownership of the lake bed creates unique challenges.
He says the board's first priority is to compete a recreational management plan.
The other Tuwharetoa members are Maria Nepia, Tangonui Kingi and Rakeipoho Taiaroa, while the crown appointees are Tongariro Taupo Conservation Board member Mike Britton, Taupo tourism operator Chris Johnston, NIWA freshwater and estuaries chief scientist John Quinn, and Taupo District Councillor Anna Park.
