Tauranga pays for hapū planning
Tauranga City Council is paying to boost tangata whenua involvement in its resource planning.
Councillors this week voted to allocate $30,000 a year for Tauranga hapū to develop management plans.
The plans will describe important resource management issues and areas of interest and give advice on cultural values, historical accounts and social, economic and cultural issues of concern to the 13 hapū.
Management plans must be considered when councils decide on resource consents.
With a view to future co-governance issues, the plans can be used to set future direction in relation to social, economic and cultural issues as well as environmental issues.
Tangata Whenua Committee member Rean Tuanau says the money will mean council, hapū and iwi can plan for changes coming out of the treaty settlements, including any co-governance arrangements that may be negotiated.
