Peters: ETS changes damaging forest industry
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters has slammed changes to the Emissions Trading Scheme.
Maori forest owners and the Climate Change Iwi Leaders Group say the proposals have already crashed the market for carbon credits, slashing hundreds of millions of dollars off the value of Maori assets including the forests coming across in treaty settlements.
Mr Peters says it's a problem for all sectors involved in emissions trading
"Maori are caught up as all foresters are in appalling change to the ETS regime that has everybody in the forestry industry saying 'we're out of here, what you have done is instead of having a domestic system, you are importing cheap international imports by way of carbon trading and you have damaged our industry immensely,'" he says.
