Waka Tapu leg to Mangareva a piece of cake
The Waka Tapu expedition has reached the island of Mangareva in French Polynesia, on its way to Rapanui-Easter Island.
Captain Jack Thatcher says the double-hulled voyaging waka Te Aurere and Ngahiraka Mai Tawhiti arrived on Monday local time after four frustrating days of beating into a north-easterly wind coming directly from the island.
He says the voyage from Tupuai to Mangareva was a piece of cake compared to the 43 days spent sailing from Aotearoa to Tupuai.
The crews will stay until Saturday or Sunday reprovisioning and repairing the waka and sharing their experiences through community engagements and school visits.
