Camp teaches rangatahi respect for Tangaroa
Children of families connected to Black Power and the Mongrel Mob are among those attending a summer camp backed by Ngāti Kahungunu iwi and government agencies.
Organiser Zac Makoare, who works at the Oranga Hinengaro (Mental Health) unit at Te Taiwhenua ō Heretaunga, says the Te Taitimu Trust’s marine summer programme encourages the participants to put education first when they leave secondary school.
As well as learning about water safety from people like Water Safety New Zealand's ambassador Rob Hewitt, they will also learn how to better look after the marine and coastal environment.
Mr Makoare says the trust hopes to motivate rangatahi to become future leaders through active engagement with Tangaroa.
He hōtaka raumati hai tautoko i ō tātou tamariki
Kei te whakahaere hopuni raumati te iwi ō Ngāti Kahungunu i ēnei rā hararei nei, me te aha, hei tā te tumu ō te kaupapa nei, ā Zac Makoare,
kei reira ētahi ō ngā tamariki ā ngā tāngata ō te rōpū Mangaru me te rōpū Mangu Kaha e noho tahi ana.
Hei tāna, ko te tino whainga ō te kaupapa nei, arā, ō Te Taitimu Trusts Marine Summer Programme, he akiaki i ngā tamariki katoa kia kaha te whai i te mātauranga kia kore ai e puta tohu kore i te kura.
Kei te ako ngā tamariki i ngā tikanga e haumaru ai rātou i roto i te wai, ā, Rob Hewitt, tētahi ō ngā kaiako.
