Blenheim also celebrated Maori culture over the weekend with Rangitane coming together.
Omaka Marae manager Kiley Nepia says it’s the first time the biannual Rangitane Ahurei, has been held in the South Island, with the Wairau branch of the iwi hosting whanau from Wairarapa, Manawatu and Tamaki Nui A Rua.
He says Rangitane in Te Tau Ihu have struggled to keep their unique cultural identity alive.
The Ahurei included debates, sporting competitions and visits to sites of significance.
