Ngapuhi sign up for Tuhoronuku
Almost half of Ngapuhi’s 110 hapu have nominated representatives who will vote on the members of the treaty settlement body Tuhoronuku.
Electionz.com, the independent company managing the election of the trustees, says 60 nominations have come in from 50 hapu.
Tuhoronuku interim chair Sonny Tau says many of the remaining hapu were no longer active, but the names were included in the mandate list out of respect for their historical status.
More kaikorero nominations are expected before the deadline of 5pm tomorrow.
Nominations for trustees representing, kaumatua, kuia and urban areas close next Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Ngati Hine has asked for an urgent hearing into its Waitangi Tribunal claim against the Crown’s recognition of the Tuhoronuku mandate.
Runanga chair Waihoroi Shortland claims the crown failed to act impartially or to consider Ngati Hine’s concerns over its large natural groupings policy.
