Urban input next phase for Whanau Ora
The chief executive of Te Puni Kokiri says appointing commissioning agencies is the next important step for Whanau Ora.
The National Urban Maori Authority has been chosen to set up a new agency, Te Pou Matakana, to oversee the scheme in the North Island.
An iwi-led consortium will manage Te Putahitanga o Te Waipounamu for South Island whanau and there is a separate Pasifika body.
Michelle Hippolite rejects criticism that anecdotal evidence is being used to justify the system for integrated service delivery, and says there is research showing the wider benefits of strengthening families.
"Anything that can support that whanau, with their whakapapa, can support that whanau make great education and learning choices, can support that whanau to find, if not to create employment; what Whanau Ora is about is taking us into that next phase – Maori can define what they want to do with the support of government," she says.
