Sharing licence translated
Creative Commons Licences, which give copyright holders a way to allow others to share and build upon their work, have been translated into te reo Maori.
Karaitiana Taiuru from the Creative Commons Aotearoa Advisory Panel says it’s the first translation of the licences into an indigenous language.
He says the licences will encourage taonga and matauranga to be created, shared and published while recognising iwi, hapu and whanau, as well as whakapapa of the material.
The licences are increasingly used by teachers, librarians, artists, musicians, researchers and government departments.
The translation was done by Ian Cormack from Taumatua Maori Language Services, who says terms such as Sui Generis Database Rights provided interesting challenges.
Creative Commons Aotearoa wants feedback on the translation from speakers of te reo Maori.
