Nelson rangatahi shy away from mayoral mentoring
Labour MP Rino Tirikatene is attempting to salvage a Nelson City Council mentoring programme for Maori youth.
The council advertised for a rangatahi to have one-on-one mentoring with mayor Rachel Reese for a year but got no takers.
It’s part of a national mayoral mentoring programme to help young Maori develop and enhance their leadership skills.
Mr Tirikatene says he encouraged the council to keep the opportunity open and he will use his own networks to find a candidate.
He’s also offering to act as a mentor himself.
Rangatahi on the programme are expected to undertake a 100-hour community service project to demonstrate leadership, practise new strategies and pass on what they have learned.
The mayors and rangatahi are also required to attend leadership retreats to network with past and current members of the programme.
