Rotorua aims for haka record
Rotorua is having a shot at the world haka record.
The International Rugby Club hopes to get more than 6000 people performing Ka Mate at Rotorua’s Village Green on June 17 before the British and Irish Lions play the Maori All Blacks.
Co-founder Tony Molloy says that there is no better place than Rotorua to reclaim the record for the world’s largest haka.
The official record of 4028 participants was set at an event organised by car manufacturer Mazda in Brive-la-Gaillarde, France, in 2014.
Rotorua needs more than the 6200 who took part in Masterton in November in an attempt that has yet to be ratified by the Guinness Book of Records.
That means almost 10 percent of Rotorua’s population will need to be at the Village Green for the attempt – and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council is making bus services free that day to help them get there.
Rotorua Lakes Council kaitiaki Maori Monty Morrison, says the record attempt is a significant opportunity for the Rotorua community to profile its strong culture on the international stage.
