Tuākana on hand to stop law bullies
The Māori lawyers association has set up a panel to support members who may wish to make complaints about bullying, harassment or other problems within the professions.
Former tumuaki wahine Ophir Cassidy says a survey done in May for the New Zealand Law Society found Māori women lawyers were the most likely to be bullied or subjected to sexual harassment.
The issue was tackled at a special session at Te Hunga Roia o Aotearoa’s annual conference earlier this month.
"We’ve set up what we call a Ngā Hoa Aroha panel, senior members of our Māori law society who have put their names forward to be available to anyone in our membership when issues such as that arise, not just around bullying or sexual harassment within the workplace but any other issues where they feel they need to speak to a senior member or a tuākana," Ms Cassidy says.
