Shaky end source of mirth for master Nunns
Musician and broadcaster Moana Maniapoto says she treasures her memories of the late taonga puoro master Richard Nunns.
Maniapoto has shared some of those memories in a tribute on the E Tangata website.
The works of the Nelson-based teacher along with the late Hirini Melbourne and instrument maker Brian Flintoff caught her attention in the early stages of her band, and they ended up playing her albums.
Nunns also came on stage with the band, travelling the world and mentoring younger players like Horomona Horo, Rangi Rangitukunoa and Jerome Kavanagh.
"The part I chuckle over was the fact when he was teaching after he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, he was joking some of his pupils were mimicking his tremors as he was teaching them flute so he was a lovely man and we treasure those memories, my band and I," Maniapoto says.
A celebration of the life of Richard Nunns was held today at Founders Heritage Park in Nelson.
