MP dismayed at Dome tip green light
Taitokerau MP Kelvin Davis says he’s disappointed a mega-tip near Warkworth has been given resource consent.
He says with millions of dollars being spent to clean up the catchment draining into the Kaipara Harbour, he understands why iwi and the wider community are concerned at Waste Management’s Dome Valley project.
Despite the tip being sited alongside the Hoteo River, a majority of independent commissioners were satisfied the engineering solutions proposed by the company would prevent leakage.
Mr Davis expects the decision to be appealed, but can play no part in the process.
"There are very good reasons parliament and the courts are kept separate. It is very frustrating and the Māori in you goes 'Oh crickey, why is this happening," he says.
Mr Davis says he has constituents asking why, if the Far North District Council is threatening to place restrictions on Māori land to protect significant natural area, Auckland Council is greenlighting a major project on such a sensitive area.
