Local stories get boost
Māori storytellers are invited to apply to round four of a fund aimed at generating quality localised te reo Māori education resources.
Te Aho Ngārahu received a $1.5 million boost in Budget 2020, increasing its annual funding to $3.4 million.
Associate Education Minister Kelvin Davis says since starting in 2017 the initiative has funded over 200 resources including an interactive digital game capturing Nukutawhiti’s journey from Hawaiki to Hokianga from Hawaiki, an app telling the purākau of volcanic peaks in south Auckland, digital story books about Māori superheroes Pūwhaorangi of Te Arawa and Ngarue of Taranaki, and an ebook collecting stories of Moriori history on Rēkohu.
He says Māori storytellers get to tell their stories in their way, while ākonga and students, both Māori and non-Māori, come to understand local history through the eyes of Māori.
Applications for Te Aho Ngārahu close on August 20.
