Iwi grieves at shock death
Northland-based MP Shane Jones says the death of Houhora police officer Gail Shepherd is being felt widely in Te Aupouri.
Constable Gail Shepard died while walking dogs at Helena Bay on Saturday when a car hit a power pole and then hit her.
A member of the Conrad whanau, the mother of three played a leading role in the annual Waitangi Day waka regatta and was also involved in netball, rugby and other youth and community activities.
Mr Jones says her service will be remembered by those gathering at Pōtahi Marae in Te Kao.
“She was a genuine servant of her people and I’m absolutely confident there’ll be a massive send off for her. And she’s got her own kids and mokopuna, so it’s a very dark cloud on the marae in Waimirirangi in the far north today,” he says.
The funeral for Gail Shepherd will be held tomorrow, and she will be taken to her whanau wāhi tapu Tūtūmaiao..
