Trauma or treatment contrasting views on 100 day plan
Māori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi says the coalition Government’s 100-day plan will create more trauma and inter-generational harm for Māori.
The 100 days is up today, and the Government has put an unprecedented volume of legislation through under urgency, with some sitting days running from 9am to midnight.
Many of the bills directly affect Maori
“We see the harm they’re creating. We see the intergenerational trauma they continue to create among our people. Even their youth military camps – this is just a return to the 60s, 70s and 80s when the gangs were created. The greatest violence you can inflict on any community or on any nation is poverty. Let’s start dealing with poverty. That is the ultimate cause of the situations we are in today,” Mr Waititi say.
He says the Government is putting economics over people and disregarding the planet, the environment and also the treaty rights of tangata whenua.
Meanwhile, the coalition Government has wound up its 100 day plan of action. by releasing five key health targets.
Health Minister Shane Reti said they are faster cancer treatment, improved immunisation rates, shorter stays in emergency departments, shorter wait times for first specialist assessments and shorter times for elective treatment.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon was in Whangārei for the announcement and said the targets are the last of the 49 action points on the 100 day plan.
