Familiar celebration key to Matariki message
A Māori-owned advertising company is looking to make Matariki more relatable to New Zealanders of all backgrounds.
The second official Matariki public holiday will be held on July 14.
Mahi Tahi chief creative officer Jade Maipi says the campaign it’s preparing for Māori broadcast funding agency Te Mangai Paho aims to make all New Zealanders comfortable with celebrating the Maori new year
“We were looking at commonalities that cultures are known to do with their friends and whanau so we can draw on that to engage them and show them this is what it is. You already know this. You already do this with your friends and whanau and you can transfer this and do this for Matariki,” she says.
