Te Matatini mauri shared with Manurewa

Manurewa Marae last night welcomed the mauri of Te Matatini in a ceremony that will be repeated at marae across Tāmaki Makaurau.
Tāmaki Kapa Haka spokesperson Annette Wehi says they’re taking a lead from Ngāti Kahungunu.
In the lead up to hosting Te Matatini 2017, that iwi took the symbolic representation of the competition to every marae in Hawke’s Bay.
"When they shared that we thought what an awesome idea to do that. Because up in Tāmaki here we have 22 iwi. To be able to have that opportunity to understand what Te Matatini is about, to share the mauri among the people, to have our own marae hosting because they will be looking after the thousands of people that come up to us in 2021, just an awesome idea," Ms Wehi says.
When the mauri is not at another marae it will be held by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei within Tumutumuwhenua.
