Download AudioTreaty settlement organisation Te Pūtea Whakatupu Trust has launched an associate directorship programme to give talented Māori professionals a fast track into governance roles.
Te Aho Pihama, the head of Māori advisory at Kiwibank, is one of the first eight He Tukutuku Koiora candidates.
He says the 30-month programme teaches governance principles and kaupapa Māori theory along with understanding how to deliver te Tiriti o Waitangi outcomes.
There’s also support and advice on things like dealing with being te Maori – the only Maori on a board.
It can be a lonely place – when you are “Te Maori” but there is a really strong whanau connection through this cohort.. and then a much wider support system, who really enable us to do what we do.
Te Pūtea Whakatupu Trust was established through the Māori Fisheries Settlement to promote Māori education, training and research.
