Maxwell celebrating to the max

Ngāti Rangiwewehi kaumatua and longstanding Rotorua Lakes district councillor Trevor Maxwell is at Government House this afternoon to be made a Companion of the New Zealand order of merit.
It comes 20 years after he was made a Member of the Order for services to local government and Maori – and award he was able to receive alongside his late wife Atareta.
The veteran kapa haka stalwart says it caps a joyous week.
“I’m going to go there with a big smile on my face and somewhere in there is our beautiful Governor General Dame (Cindy) Kiro talks to me I might the chance to say ‘hey look, we are celebrating even now at the moment, Te Matatini received $34 million.’ I was celebrating for the whole week last week,” Mr Maxwell says.
Also on today’s investiture list is Ngai Tuhoe kaumatua Haare Williams, who is to be knighted.
