Māori Pah at Gallipoli marked
Visitors to Gallipoli will now be able to see the area where the Māori Contingent was based in 1915.
A special ceremony was held as part of this year’s Anzac commemorations on the peninsula to remember the contribution of the 500 Māori in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
As a result of a request made during last year’s commemoration by Veterans Minister Meka Whaitiori to the head of the Gallipoli Historic Parks Directorate, the New Zealand Defence Force has worked with Turkish authorities to create an information sign and improve access to the “Pah” site in Gallipoli.
During this year’s service at the site, a replica King’s Colour of the Pioneer (Māori) Battalion was paraded.
