Candidates warned of baptism of fire

Maori Party president John Tamihere is warning candidates this year’s election campaign is likely to get ugly.
He’s particularly worried by anti-Maori campaigns on social media.
But he says new Tāmaki Makaurau candidate Takutai Moana Natasha Kemp, and second time Te Tai Tokerau candidate Mariameno Kapa-Kingi are used to fighting for their people and beliefs.
“It’s a courageous step, and a lot of people don’t appreciate the inspection that comes in on you. And if it’s a dirty little campaign, which it looks like it could be, you’ve got to be understanding that you’re exposing you, your whanau, and all you’re people and followers to a baptism of fire like nothing else,” Mr Tamihere says.
The Maori Party is seeking candidates for Hauraki-Waikato and Te Tai Tonga.
