ACT to bring back kura hourua
ACT leader David Seymour is promising the return of charter schools if his party is peart of the next Government.
The experiment in publicly-funded private education was part of a confidence and supply agreement with the John Key Government.
When Labour took the Treasury benches, most of them took up the option of coming under the existing special character school model.
Mr Seymour says there was Maori support for the experiment.
“Partnership schools, kura hourua were endorsed by the Iwi Chairs Forum. They gave poor brown kids who never get a chance a chance, in the main. I’m so proud what we did with charter schools. I think it’s a disgrace the prime minister of kindness took those opportunities away. What threat were 12 small schools for disadvantaged kids? Of course we’d bring it back,” he says.
