Colonial push back disrupts Pacific plan
The Green Party is supporting Foreign Minister Winston Peters’ decision not to go to New Caledonia.
Riots have closed down the French territory as Indigenous Kanaks protest electoral changes and the subversion of a process that offered a path to independence.
Greens’ Pacific spokesperson Teanau Tuiono says Maori may see echoes of their own history.
“The Land Wars did happen here so we’ve had examples in our history where people have resisted colonisation. People in different places around the world are still pushing back against that and are at a particular phase in the way they are dealing with colonisation but we’ve had that stuff – that’s how we became a minority in our own country,” he says.
Winston Peters has already visited Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu, and will now head to Tuvalu.
