Boot camp plan political stunt
Māori party co-leader Rawiri Waititi says National’s boot camp plan for young offenders is a stunt to get votes.
He says such initiatives haven’t worked in the past.
“What we need in the world is a lot more aroha and not a lot more incarceration. All this is saying is we need to lock Maori up at a young age. It’s a political stunt by the National Party to get more votes. This in not about healing or working with communities to start healing some of the trauma that continues to plague those particular communities,” he says.
Mr Waititi says the core of the problem isn’t ram raids but poverty, with more resources needed in the community.
