Commissioning shows Te Aka Whai Ora value
Health Minister Andrew Little says Māori Heath Authority is making itself an indispensable part of the heath system.
Te Aka Whai Ora yesterday released the results of its second commissioning round, with $71.6 million going to more than 150 Maori providers for services including maternity and early years, cancer, mental health and suicide prevention, and people living with chronic health conditions.
Mr Little says the authority is showing great leadership, and a lot of kaupapa Maori organisations are getting a much-needed uplift after years of underfunding.
There’s also significant funding for workforce development.
He says promises by National and ACT to scrap the authority fly in the face of reality.
“Everywhere I go in the health system, it doesn’t matter whether it’s Maori or pakeha or anybody, they are all saying Te Aka Whai Ora is needed, it’s absolutely necessary, because we’ve under-performed for so long in terms of delivering good healthare for Maori or makitn healthcare accessible for Maori, so they have that crucial role to play and of course they’re not just there to support kaupapa Maori health services, They’re there to make sure all health services are responsive to the needs of Maori,” Minister Little says..
