Hui on how to best awhi and manaaki tauira Māori
About 400 teachers and principals have been in Manukau this week learning how they can support Māori students.
Te Arahou MAC annual conference was organised by the Māori Achievement Collaborative, a non-profit group which aims to build the capability of schools to recognise and overcome barriers impeding educational and cultural outcomes for Māori.
Associate Education Minister Kelvin Davis says he was impressed at the even mix of Māori and Pākeha educators who attended.
“It started from a couple of Māori principals standing round saying ‘we can’t do this on our own, we need our Pākeha colleagues onboard so they know what a Māori child needs in order to feel valued so their cultural and emotional and all those sorts of needs can be met,” he says.
