Spin out of line in tamariki death

Minister for Children Kelvin Davis has defended Oranga Tamariki staff after a damning Ombudsman’s report.
Judge Peter Boshier found the organisation failed to take a bare minimum of care over safety concerns which were raised by whanau about a 5 year old who was later murdered by his carer.
Mr Davis says while the death of the child was tragic and one too many, there are 70,000 reports of concern to Oranga Tamariki every year, 200 a day.
He says because of the work done by social workers, solutions are found so 50,000 young people do not need to come into state care.
Malachi Subecz was murdered last November by the woman his mother asked to care for him when she was in prison.
