Maori magazines to be put online
Maori magazines put out by government agencies in the 1970s and 80s are to get a new digital life.
Maori Development Nanaia Mahuta says the pages of Te Kaea and Tu Tangata, which were produced by the former Department of Maori Affairs, are filled with rich content that give insight into Maori perspectives of the era.
They will be digitised by the National Library of New Zealand under an agreement with Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori and Te Puni Kokiri.
Also included in the deal is He Muka, a Maori language publication put out by Te Taura Whiri.
National librarian Bill Macnaught says digitising historic content and making it more accessible is a key part of the library's strategy to keep enriching its online collections.
An earlier Tari Maori publication, Ta Ao Hau, has been avaiulable online for several years, and there are also collections of historic Maori language newspapers on the Papers Past site.
