Hohourongo call after Kaitaia carving attacked
Former MP Shane Jones is calling on the Pamapuria marae to take action on the attack on a carving marking the entrance to Kaitaia.
He says the perpetrators have connections to the marae about 10 kilometres south of the time.
The carving project had the support of the wider community, and it shouldn’t be undermined by a dysfunctional minority.
It’s likely the attack was caught on security camera.
“The police have their process and the council has their process but within Maoridom there needs to be a hohourongo – the people who perpetrated this cultural molestation need to be held accountable and then the marae needs to enter into a kind of gift-giving hohourongo kaupapa with the other Maori who belong to other marae who want to see Kaitaia move on from the name Frytaia and they are sick to death of all the actions of some of the underbelly that does infest parts of Northland,” Mr Jones says.
