Te Aute principal rebuilds pathway to leadership
The new principal of Te Aute College, Rachel Kingi, says a $5 million upgrade of boarding facilities should make the historic school more attractive for whānau.
The putea comes from the Māori Boarding Schools initiative in Budget 2021.
She says Te Aute also needs to get away from the reputation for bullying some Kura are known for, and to concentrate on the real skills of Maori leadership.
“Leadership is achieved through service to others and manaakitanga is about growing the mana in others. If we can harness those things and have that become the rhetoric and the mindset of our boys I think the other things will fade away and once they see they can be successful in their own right and on their own pathway, there is less need to try to dominate others,” Ms Kingi says.
