Uawa clean up pointer to Te Tau Ihu task
As Te Tau Ihu starts to clean up after its latest floods, Uawa-Tolaga Bay is still clearing its beaches three years after flash floods dropped tonnes of slash and logs.
Victor Walker from the Uawanui Sustainability and Environmental Project says iwi, forestry companies, the community and council interests came together to tackle the disaster.
“We ended up with literally hundreds of thousands of cubic metres of slash and forestry debris, farm debris as well, alongside our pristine waterways, along our rivers, and devastatingly along our beautiful beaches and coastlines,” he says.

Victor Walker says the bulk of the waste went up in 90 huge bonfires last Guy Fawkes night, but there is still debris coming down the rivers.
