Drones draw data from Waikato lake system
Ohinewai farmer and conservationist Tawera Nikau’s efforts to restore the catchment around Lake Waikare has got a boost from drone technology.
On Monday AquaWatch released two drones into drains to monitor the transparency, ph and oxygen levels of water going into what’s the country’s fourth-largest lake.
He says environmental data collection is a great help to Waikato iwi and hapū developing conservation strategies.
“The council will do their own stuff and have their own results but we were able to access it on a daily basis and to partner with AquaWatch has really given us some more insight into actually knowing in real time what we’re doing and how we can improve and become better,” Mr Nikau says.
