Download AudioFormer MP Shane Jones says the Waitangi Tribunal needs to stop trying to audit political outcomes and social policy.
The tribunal is currently holding a kaupapa inquiry into the justice system, including looking at its own processes and the disparity in resourcing between claimants and the crown.
The tribunal is increasingly turning to such wide-ranging inquiries as the historical claim process is wound up.
Mr Jones says it has neither the expertise nor the authority to make a difference.
“Obviously we have got these ongoing social challenges but the tribunal in my view is unlikely to get the level of response that’s needed to effect a change not only at the political level but an attitudinal change in the bureaucracy,” he says.
Mr Jones says the tribunal’s current trajectory is not sustainable.
